Description

This is a drawstring bag made from cotton mesh. You put your bar soap inside it, use it to wash, then hang it up to dry.

The mesh does a few things.

It keeps your soap from slipping out of your hands when it’s wet. It creates lather faster than rubbing soap directly on your skin. The texture exfoliates lightly while you wash. And because the bag allows airflow, your soap dries out between uses instead of sitting in water and turning into mush.

You can also throw soap scraps in here instead of tossing them. Small leftover pieces that are too thin to hold combine together in the bag so nothing goes to waste.

Specs: 100% cotton mesh, approximately 5″ x 4″, cotton drawstring closure

what does a soap saver bag do?

Hold bar soap more easily while lightly, exfoliating the skin and keep soap bars dry when not being used.

Some people use these for travel since the bag contains any soap residue and prevents wet soap from touching other items in a toiletry bag.

the process

Wet the bag with your soap inside, rub it to create lather, then scrub your skin. The cotton mesh texture provides light exfoliation. After your shower, hang the bag somewhere with airflow. The mesh lets water drain and air circulate, so your soap stays firm instead of dissolving in a soap dish puddle.

do soap savers bags really work?

For keeping soap dry and making it last longer, yes.

Bar soap dissolves when it sits in water. A soap dish with drainage helps, but soap still stays damp. A bag allows complete airflow around the bar, which keeps it dry and firm between uses. This can double how long a bar lasts.

For creating lather, they work well. The friction from the mesh generates more foam than soap alone. You’ll use less soap to get a good lather.

For exfoliation, it depends on what you’re comparing it to. The cotton texture is gentler than a loofah but more textured than a regular washcloth. It’s enough to slough off dead skin without being harsh.

The main limitation is that you need to actually hang it to dry. If you leave it sitting in a wet heap, it defeats the purpose.

There are zero waste and eco-friendly benefits attached to this item if those things matter in your purchasing decisions.

Are Soap Saver Bags Hygienic?

They can be very hygienic if you clean them regularly and let them dry properly.

Any damp item in your bathroom—washcloths, loofahs, sponges—can grow bacteria or mold if it stays wet. Soap saver bags are no different. The advantage of mesh is that it dries faster than dense fabric, which gives bacteria less time to multiply.

Hanging the bag after each use is important. Don’t leave it in a closed shower caddy or crumpled on a shelf. It needs airflow to dry completely.

The soap itself provides some cleaning action every time you use the bag, but that doesn’t replace actual washing. Rinse the bag thoroughly after each use to remove soap residue and dead skin cells.

Cotton is naturally less hospitable to bacteria than synthetic materials, which is why these are typically made from cotton rather than polyester or nylon.

If you have compromised immunity or very sensitive skin, you might want to wash the bag more frequently or rotate between two bags.

How Often Should I Wash My Soap Saver Bag?

Once a week if you’re using it daily.

Throw it in with your regular laundry or hand wash it with hot water and detergent. Take the soap out first. You can machine wash it—the drawstring holds up fine. Air dry or tumble dry on low.

If you only use it a few times a week, every two weeks is probably fine. Watch for these signs that it needs washing sooner:

  • Soap scum buildup you can see or feel
  • Musty smell
  • The fabric feels slimy even when dry
  • Visible discoloration

Between washes, rinse it well after every use. Squeeze out the water and hang it where air can reach it.

Quick refresh between washes: soak it in hot water with white vinegar for 10 minutes, rinse, and hang dry.

Replace the bag every 2-3 months with regular use, or when the fabric starts wearing thin or developing holes.

Using It

Wash the bag before first use.

Open the drawstring, put your soap inside, pull it closed. Wet the bag in the shower, rub it to create lather, use it like a washcloth. Rinse it thoroughly when you’re done, squeeze out excess water, hang it by the drawstring loop.

For travel, keep the soap in the bag and pack it. The bag contains moisture so your soap doesn’t get everything else wet.

For soap scraps, collect small leftover pieces and put them all in the bag together. They’ll gradually combine as you use them.

After washing and exfoliating the body, try moisturizing with our Pecan Oil Body Balm.
